Admission to the program requires that you submit all required application materials through the online system of the NMSU Graduate School.

NMSU Graduate School Application

NMSU Graduate Admissions provides information for U.S. Citizens and Permanent U.S. Residents on how to apply for graduate studies at NMSU. In essence, the process requires that you a) complete and submit an online application and b) pay a non-refundable application fee.

International Student Services provides information for International Applicants on how to apply for graduate studies at NMSU. Like U.S. Citizens and Permanent U.S. Residents, International Applicants have to a) complete and submit an online application and b) pay a non-refundable application fee. However, International Applicants have to submit c) official transcripts with proof of graduation to International Student Services and d) their TOEFL scores.

NMSU Department of Geography Application

The Master of Applied Geography (MAG) program in the NMSU Department of Geography and Environmental Studies considers applications for fall admissions only. Complete applications must be received by January 15 to be considered for admission and funding through the department.

To apply to the program, all applicants must submit the following through the NMSU online application portal: a) letter of interest, b) resume or cv, and c) recommendations from three references.

The letter of interest should discuss:

• events and experiences that motivate you to pursue a master’s degree in general and a Master of Applied Geography at New Mexico State University in particular;
• research you would like to pursue, including specific research questions, objectives, or hypotheses you would like to tackle;
• personal, academic, and professional experiences that prepare you to successfully conduct this research;
• one or more potential faculty advisors whose interests and expertise align with your own and who you would like to work with; and
• your career goals.

The resume might include:

1. your name, current address, and telephone number;
2. a listing of all post high school educational institutions that you have attended, including dates, degree sought (awarded), and your GPA;
3. a listing of academic honors or awards;
4. publications and/or research experience;
5. an indication of your experience with various computer hardware and software packages; and
6. an itemization of your employment history.
